The City of Tshwane has been pleading with its residents to stop illegal dumping but the residents of Soshanguve, Block VV are complaining about not having rubbish bins.
The residents, who haven’t received their bins for more than five years said they have to use plastic bags, bought by them to put their rubbish in.
“I had to go buy a bin with my own money because I can’t keep on buying plastic bags for my waste, at least if the municipality provided the bags, it would’ve been better,” said Sifiso Ngobeni, a resident of Block VV.
Other residents said they have to put their waste in a van and go throw it wherever they find an open space because they have no choice. This is because sometimes the garbage truck does not come and that leaves them with a lot of waste on their yards.
It is alleged that waste municipal rates are charged compared to the kilogram of the rubbish bin. Some residents say they would rather not have bins than pay extra rates.
“We need street bins to avoid littering everywhere. How are we supposed to make sure we live in a clean environment when the municipality does not provide us with alternatives?” Boiumelo Phalatse, also a resident of Block VV said.
Phalatse further said that the municipality cannot rush to penalise illegal dumpers when they do not have any solutions on how to fight dumping.
Several attempts to contact the Block VV Councillor failed.
