Over 200 children from the ages of 5 – 12 years old participated on Saturday 25 August 2018, filling the sports field in Block DD, Soshanguve.
There was great excitement among the children as the KFC Mini-Cricket matches kicked off and schools from all over the Soshanguve area competed with each other. Mini-Cricket Coordinator, Kagiso Masubelele, from Northerns Cricket Union, says that the goal is to get children active and having fun outdoor and that was certainly the case at this festival.
Local KFC franchise Gunret Foods staff members from KFC Soshanguve Plaza were on hand to lend their support and encouragement to the children playing at the festival. Gunret Foods owns and operates 40 KFC’s throughout the country and has sponsored KFC Mini-Cricket T-shirts, balls, bats and equipment to the value of R98,000 at various festivals in the area this year.
“We are very proud to be part of the KFC Mini-Cricket programme which encourages children to live active lifestyles, while learning the game of cricket. It allows all those involved in the programme to grow, develop and shine,” said Burt Gunning, the Principal Operator of the KFC franchise.
KFC is committed to giving back to the community and creating platforms which bring kids closer to their cricketing heroes through the KFC Mini-Cricket programme, the KFC Mini-Cricket Kids vs Proteas Tour.
This cricket season, kids across the country stand a chance to win an awesome KFC Mini-Cricket experience to join the Proteas on their official upcoming KFC T20 International’s tour against Zimbabwe.
The KFC Mini-Cricket team will be able participate in events like dressing up in their kit and doing some warm ups with Protea heroes in preparation for the big day.
“Come match day, catch your team bus, run onto the field to take your positions as ball boys or girls on the boundaries so, pack your kit and rub shoulders with the Proteas,” said Mr Gunning.
KFC has been a sponsor of the KFC Mini-Cricket programme since 2010, and will continue as sponsors until 2025. Since KFC started sponsoring KFC Mini-Cricket, the program has grown from 83,683 kids getting active to over 120 000 in the 2017/2018 season.
KFC has been the event sponsor of the KFC T20 Internationals since the 2013/2014 season. The 2012/13 cricket season also saw KFC becoming an associate sponsor of The T20 Challenge.
Both of the T20 sponsorships resulted in KFC Mini-Cricket kids getting the opportunity to get active as ball boys and girls during games as well as participating in the coin toss and national anthems prior at the KFC T20 international games.
