Road maintenance work currently underway in parts of Soshanguve has become the centre of a political exchange over infrastructure and service delivery.
The debate began after the City of Tshwane’s MMC for Roads and Transport, Tlangi Mogale, shared images of road repair work in Soshanguve, saying the City would continue addressing infrastructure challenges in township communities.
The post followed comments by Cape Town Executive Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, who contrasted road improvement projects in Cape Town with road conditions in Soshanguve and Mabopane.
In response, Mogale said road maintenance was already taking place in Soshanguve and accused the Democratic Alliance of neglecting township infrastructure during its previous administration in the City of Tshwane.
While the political disagreement has attracted attention on social media, residents remain primarily concerned with the condition of local roads and the pace of service delivery.
Earlier this month, the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport announced that maintenance teams had completed pothole patching on the D318 in Soshanguve as part of an ongoing road maintenance programme aimed at improving road safety and driving conditions.
The City of Tshwane has also indicated that road rehabilitation and resurfacing projects form part of broader efforts to improve mobility, extend the lifespan of road infrastructure and enhance access to schools, healthcare facilities, businesses and public transport routes.
Road conditions remain one of the most common service delivery concerns raised by residents, who have frequently highlighted potholes, deteriorating roads and the cost of vehicle damage caused by poor infrastructure.
Soshanguve Pulse submitted media enquiries to the Office of the MMC for Roads and Transport and the City of Tshwane requesting further information on the road maintenance programme, including the roads currently under construction, project timelines and future rehabilitation plans.
At the time of publication, no response had been received.
