The Tshwane Metro Police Department has taken a series of public actions on gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) over the past two weeks, following recent tragic incidents involving women targeted and killed in some parts of Gauteng.

TMPD said its Social Crime Prevention Unit, alongside other departments and non-profit organisations, held a Community Imbizo at Soshanguve’s Block X Community Hall in Jukulyn on 18 September, focused on “taking united action against GBVF, educating residents on support services, and clarifying reporting mechanisms for victims.”

On 20 September, TMPD’s Social Crime Prevention Unit joined the “Say Her Name” march in Soshanguve Block F, in a 5km awareness walk followed by a prayer session, bringing together community members, law enforcement and local stakeholders to honour victims and demand action. Two days later, on 22 September, the department held a separate Prayer Day Intervention, offering prayers for victims and their families.

In its 19 September release, TMPD said it is “intensifying visible policing patrols in public areas and especially potential hotspots,” alongside “continuing proactive community education and awareness campaigns focused on safety, prevention, and violence reduction.” The department urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious behaviour, noting that “perpetrators live amongst us.”

TMPD’s Media Office was contacted with these specific questions and had not responded by time of publication.
