The Gauteng Department of Health has congratulated members of its athletics club, known as the “Blue Train”, for completing the 2026 Comrades Marathon, praising their commitment to fitness and healthy living.

In a statement issued after the race, the department commended the runners who represented Gauteng Health in one of South Africa’s most demanding endurance events. Their participation, it said, demonstrates the importance of physical activity, particularly among healthcare professionals who promote wellness in their daily work.

The Comrades Marathon, widely regarded as the world’s oldest and largest ultramarathon, attracts thousands of runners each year and is recognised globally as a true test of endurance, discipline and mental resilience.

Healthcare workers’ participation in the race comes at a time when South Africa continues to grapple with rising cases of lifestyle-related illnesses, including obesity, hypertension and diabetes. Health experts consistently emphasise regular physical activity as a key measure in preventing non-communicable diseases and improving overall well-being.

By taking part in high-profile sporting events such as the Comrades Marathon, healthcare professionals reinforce their role not only as caregivers but also as advocates for healthy living. Their visibility in endurance sport sends a strong message about the benefits of exercise beyond hospital and clinic walls.

In communities such as Soshanguve and the broader Tshwane region, initiatives that promote physical activity remain vital. Residents continue to seek opportunities for healthier lifestyles through walking groups, local sports clubs, fitness programmes and community-based recreational activities.

Soshanguve is home to several healthcare facilities that serve thousands of residents, making employee wellness and health promotion critical components of broader public health efforts.
