The Tshwane Community will hold a spiritual intervention, road safety campaign and remembrance of the loved ones who died on the roads.
The campaign will be held at Mabopane Highway on Thursday 02 November 2017. The event marks its 5th year as requested by the community to make awareness campaigns on road safety.
According to the organizer, Mr John Molepo, it is pivotal that road safety campaign is intensified especially as the festive season approaches.
In 2016 November, Mabopane Highway had 304 accidents and by November, this year it has reached 249.
Since January, Mabopane Highway had 249 accidents with almost every weekend recording an accident. The month of March recorded the most number of accidents totaling 34 accidents followed by June (30) Month.
“The reduction from 304 to 249 indicate that our efforts are having an effect in ensuring road safety is working. The message we spread as community members of Tshwane is that the need for high visibility of traffic enforcement agencies should be intensified.
“We also caution the behavior of motorist to exercise patience on the road, respecting each other and obeying the rules of the road,” Mr Molepo said.
The Road Accident Fund (RAF) reports that they received 20 2100 new claims of accidents in the year 2016/2017. The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) reported that a total of 12 944 fatalities and road tragic crashes were reported and the total cost of road traffic crashes on South African road network for 2015 amounted to an estimated R142.95 Billion equating to 3.5% of the GDP.
The Arrive Alive (AA) also reported that 14 071 people die on South African roads and the human factor is the biggest contributor to road crashes and fatalities (while 2700 people in Gauteng) died on the road.
Spiritual groups, churches and other stakeholders will form part of the initiative. The City of Tshwane, Road Accident Fund, Taxi Associations, funeral parlors and community members will also attend the event.
Families of the deceased will also be in attendance. Community members will lay wreaths and light candles as they remember their loved ones who lost their lives on the roads.
