Gauteng Premier, Mr David Makhura, accompanied by MEC of health in Gauteng, Mr Bandile Masuku, visited Soshanguve crossing mall today to assess compliance with the lockdown regulations by shop owners and shoppers including maintaining of social distancing and the use of cloth face masks.
The Premier said the government is ensuring compliance in areas that are known for accommodating a lot of people like shopping malls.
“We have targeted emerging hotspots to ensure compliance, those areas where people come together like shopping malls like this one. We want to make sure that every business that is open here is complying with the regulations of the lockdown including that people are wearing face masks and adhere to social distancing,” said Premier Makhura.
The Premier also checked for sanitization as he walked around the Mall and to ensure that only shops that are supposed to operate are open during the level 4 lockdown.
“We are concerned that there may also be shops that might sell expired food or overprice their products and we did not find any of that,” he said.
The Premier said the hotspots are changing, therefore, residents of Soshanguve should follow orders and note that the virus is not for specific people or specific places. He said the suburbs are experiencing recoveries while new hotspots are emerging.
“Soshanguve is one of the emerging hotspots, we want to communicate to the people of Soshanguve that COVID 19 is here. It is not something for some people, it is not something for some places it is here,” he said.
“We were able to satisfy ourselves that the workers in the shops that are opened are complying with the protocols, people are not allowed to enter shops without a mask and they are sanitized as they enter the mall,” said Premier Makhura.
