Teddy Mohlala, a community member of Soshanguve block L, decided to celebrate his 34th birthday at Khaya Lami Lethemba (My home of Hope). This orphanage is located in the heart of Soshanguve, block NN, and it has been running for a period of 10 years. The orphanage currently has 12 children who stay there permanently of ages ranging from 3 to 18 years.
Khaya Lami Lethemba is not your regular orphanage, as it also has a day care that is run for free. The orphanage accommodates children from vulnerable families up to the age of 25.
Mohlala, a Client Liason Manager, holds this orphanage close to his heart. It is for that particular reason that he decided to celebrate his birthday there this year.
“I feel like we are more privileged to wake up every morning and be employed, to earn salaries that other people don’t have. In the spirit of my birthday, I decided to not do anything for myself, as I have the opportunity to do so every month,” he said.
“To be honest, at first I was not happy with what I had collected as far as donations were concerned. I felt like it was just not enough. To my surprise, on the 25th of June 2019, the actual day of my birthday, I got to work and the donations from my co-workers were amazing. They contributed to giving to the orphanage, and so did my friends whom I attended high school with”, he added.
Mohlala has decided that each year from now, his birthday celebration will be held at the orphanage. He intends to make it an annual ceremony, as he has now adopted Khaya Lami Lethemba as his own baby.
Nombulelo Lelosa, manager of Khaya Lami Lethemba said the donations came at the right time, as they were almost out of toiletries and even the food supply was running low. ‘’We are grateful for everything we received today,’’ she said.
