Informal community of Soshanguve, Extension-14 faces a dire condition due to lack of water supply in the community, during the lockdown.
Tshwane’s Media Relations Director, Mr Lindela Mashigo, said the provision of water storage tanks is an on-going process. The City is providing water through 826 of 5000 liters of water tanks and 106 of 10 000 liters of water tanks and 37 of 2500 liters of water tanks.
He said there is a total of 969 water tanks that will be servicing the informal settlements in the City of Tshwane.
One of the Residents in the informal settlement of Soshanguve, Extension- 14, Mr Osborn Mudao (31), said when it rains, it is compulsory to collect water to bath from the roof of his shack because it is not easy to get water.
“Residents fight over a chance to get water, so there are a lot of disputes for water, and the taps are not pumping enough water resulting in long queues for water, we are really struggling.
“I know we are not on the budget of the municipality but when it comes to water, the municipal has to make a plan, because water is essential,” said Mr Modao.
Sipho Mbatha (25) of Soshanguve Ext- 14, said the municipality is aware of the water shortage in the area but the community is deliberately ignored.

The City of Tshwane’s Media Relations Director, Mr Lindela Mashigo, said as of 13 May 2020, the City has been distributing water through 252 of 10 000 liters of mobile water tankers and 492 of 5000 liters of water tanks.
- Region 1: 14 of 5000 liters of water tanks and 47 of 10 000 mobile water tankers
- Region 2: 53 of 5000 liters of water tanks and 44 of 10 000 mobile water tankers
- Region 3: 89 of 5000 liters of water tanks and 37 of 10 000 liters of mobile water tankers
- Region 4: 44 of 5000 liters of water tanks and 21 of 10 000 liters of mobile water tankers
- Region 5: 169 of 5000 liters of water tanks and 43 of 10 000 mobile water tankers
- Region 6: 54 of 5000 liters of water tanks and 32 of 10 000 liters of mobile water tankers
- Region 7: 69 of 5000 liters of water tanks and 28 of 10 000 liters of mobile water tankers.
Mr Mashigo says, ‘‘The National Department of Water and Sanitation (NDHWS) provided 12 of 10 000 liters of mobile water tankers which were distributed as follows to Region 1, 3 and 6 that got 01 mobile water tanker each. Region 4, 5 and 7 got 02 mobile water tankers each and Region 2 got 03 mobile water tankers.
NDWS also provided additional 03 of 18 000 liters of mobile water tanker of which two were distributed to Region five and one distributed to Region 1.
“This means that we are currently supplying water through 267 mobile water tankers to date. The NDHWS also delivered 327 of 5000 liters of water tanks, 102 of 10 000 liters of water tanks 37 of 2500 liters of water tanks. The total delivered by NDHWS is 466 as of 26 April 2020.’’ Mr Mashigo said.
Mashigo says, the water tanks were delivered as follows;
- Region 1: 80 of 5000 liters of water tanks and 10 of 10 000 liters of water Tanks
- Region 2: 37 of 5000 liters of water tanks, 37 of 2500 liters of water tanks and 50 of 10 000 liters of water tanks
- Region 3: 77 of 5000 liters of water tanks
- Region 4: 10 of 5000 liters of water tanks, 12 of 10 000 liters of water tanks
- Region 5: 66 of 5000 liters of water tanks and 10 of 10 000 liters of water tanks
- Region 6: 25 of 5000 liters of water tanks and 10 of 10 000 liters of water tanks
- Region 7: 32 of 5000 liters of water tanks and 10 of 10 000 liters of water tanks
- There are also organizations that donated water tanks and were distributed as follows:
- Region 1: 4 of 10 000 liters of water tanks
- Region 4: 4 of 5000 liters of water tanks
- Region 6: 3 of 5000 liters of water tanks
Mr Mashigo says, ‘‘this means that the City is providing water through 826 of 5000 liters of water tanks and 106 of 10 000 liters of water tanks and 37 of 2500 liters of water tanks. There is a total of 969 water tanks that will be servicing the informal settlements in the City of Tshwane.
“There is also an organization that donated 40 000 liters of the borehole in Region 2. The team has tested the water through the USD laboratory team and the results were positive.
“The trucks are now filling water from this borehole during the lockdown period. Only 329 of water tanks out of 466 donated by NDHWS are currently operational – 52 in Region 1, 105 in Region 2, 25 in Region 3, 19 in Region 4, 55 in Region 5, 31 in Region 6, 42 in Region 7,” Mr Mashigo said.
