Tshwane residents have been warned about the waste illegally dumping on the roadside and to contractors who are blocking access to certain landfill sites.

Tshwane Head Administrator, Mr Mpho Nawa, said the City will not hesitate to take harsh action against the residents that will not obey the law.

“The City understands the frustration of some residents whose waste has not been collected, however, taking the law into their hands constituted a by-law infringement and the authorities would act swiftly against those that are breaking the law,” said Mr Nawa.

Furthermore, Mr Nawa also cautioned certain service providers whose contracts have not been renewed at certain landfill sites, saying they were not entitled to the automatic contract extension.

“The City has experienced challenges with waste collection in the past two weeks following the expiry of the vehicle lease contract at the end of last month,” he added.

He said the municipality managed to clear the waste collection backlog in most parts of the City at the weekend and has gone back to the normal collection schedule with effect.

“We condemn the behavior of some of our residents that have been illegally dumping waste on the side of the road and the conduct of some of the service providers that demand to have their contracts extended. While we understand the frustration of our residents whose waste has not been collected, it is illegal and irresponsible for anyone to break the law.

“We will not be bullied by rogue service providers who block access to our landfill sites, we will unleash law enforcement onto them,” Mr Nawa said.

The City wishes to reiterate its apology to the residents for the inconvenience they have endured for the past two weeks due to the non-collection of waste.

“The schedule is back to normal from, Monday, 14 September 2020, and residents whose waste has not been collected are urged to report such to the City’s customer care call center at 012 358 9999 or alternatively send an e-mail to CustomerS@Tshwane.gov.za,” he said.
