Two in one, radio host and journalism student shares his short journey to reaching his dream, with us.

While other kids wish to be doctors, pilots and teachers, others wish to be on the public sphere. Admire Maluleke (24) always had a dream of becoming a radio or television host.

When he enrolled for a national diploma in journalism at Tshwane University of Technology’s Soshanguve Campus in 2017, he did not know that his dream would come true earlier than he expected.

Maluleke currently works for TUT FM as a host for the station’s current affairs show called Live@6. He started his radio career when he joined TUT FM in 2017 as a newsreader. He says he grew from a newsreader to a stand-in presenter and was promoted to being a host for the 12-3pm slot.

“I worked hard and showed commitment to my work and this earned me a promotion early 2018 to host my own show called Rhythm 12to3” said Maluleke.

The 24 year old Soshanguve born hopes to work for a national radio station and cannot specifically name the station but it has to be a talk radio station. His ambition for radio was not inspired by anyone but he fell in love with the medium at an early stage. In just a short period, he has grown from just a journalism student to a radio host.

He said he sees community media as a university that prepares young and upcoming journalists as well as media practitioners for the national media world. He says community media determines whether you will survive the corporate world or not and has the power to build and destroy you based on how you approach it.

“It will build you if you approach it in a positive way. It will destroy if you chase fame, and if it destroys you, you will never come back strong. I respect community media,” he said.

When asked about his other interests in the media world, he confidently said that TV and print media are also close to his heart.

“If I was not in radio, I’d definitely would be a TV host or a print media reporter, but I believe that I belong in radio”, said Maluleke.

If he is not working, the radio host attends classes and do assignments since he is doing his third year. He also prefers listening to radio, specifically talk radio as well as watch soccer.

“I am a big fan of soccer and I love Kaizer Chiefs, that’s why I spend my spare time watching it,” he said.
