MMC for Environmental and Agriculture Management, Ms Katlego Mathebe, joined City officials at the Ayanda Primary School in Soshanguve as part of the City’s World Wetlands Day awareness program on 18 February 2022.

MMC Mathebe said wetlands play a vital role by removing toxic substances and sediment from watercourses, improving downstream water quality, reducing the severity of droughts, regulating water flow, and providing habitat for a variety of plant and animal species.

“We encouraged Grade 7 learners to take action for wetlands and to be the change communities need,” she said.

Ms. Mathebe said wetlands are under threat from littering, illegal dumping, water pollution, and at times, farming activities.

“This affects the natural flow and functioning of wetlands – and if left to continue, will destroy our wetlands,” she said.
