Executive Mayor of Tshwane, Mr Solly Msimanga joined forces with the metro department on the Mabopane highway over the first weekend of September, to ensure that road users are educated on the dangers of drunk driving and safe practices behind the wheel.
The weekend operations by Mayor Msimanga’s administration to protect the safety of residents were a success when the Tshwane Metro Police Department saw 53 drunken driving and public drinking arrests across different regions of the city.
The success of the operations also includes the recovery of two stolen vehicles and suspected stolen cables.

“Drunken driving is one of the leading causes of accidents and fatalities on our roads and for this reason, the City will continue to increase awareness and law enforcement to curb this,” Executive Mayor Msimanga said.
The operation is underpinned by one of the five development strategic pillars, to keep the Tshwane’s residents safe. The Mayor further said that all road users, including pedestrians need to respect the rules of the road, as this is the only way to reduce road fatalities.
“We will continue to advocate for the safe driving, not only during the festive seasons but throughout the year. We will further arrest those found to be contravening the law in order to save lives,” said Mr Msimanga.
The City urges drivers to refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol and to use alternative means of transport than endangering the lives of innocent people. The metro police’s increased visible policing will be initiated in strategic areas to make sure the roads are safe and danger free.
