The 12 March 2018, marked the first day of world Salt Awareness Week which runs until 18 March. This week aims on raising awareness on the types of illnesses one could get when their salt intake is high. According to the heart foundation SA, South Africans consume about ten grams of salt, which is twice the amount of the World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends.

Vegetables and fruits are always a better choice for a meal to reduce salt intake

Too much salt intake can raise your blood pressure, cause you heart diseases, stroke, cause dementia and cause kidney disease.

There are ways to cut down on salt such as using a pinch of salt and using spices and herbs to boost flavour. Avoid takeaways and rather cook your own food.

Make smart food swaps and instead of eating crisps, eat popcorn.  Remove the saltshaker from the dinner table and gradually add little salt when cooking, your taste buds will adjust.

Spices can act as an alternative for salt

Wash canned or frozen food that was in brine (salt water), eat more fresh fruit and vegetables, and avoid canned.
