The Student Governance and Leadership Development (SGLD) at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), held an anti-crime and anti-violence campaign on Saturday 24 March.
The participants walked from the South campus to the North campus accompanied by actors from Skeem Saam and ended in an interactive soccer match between TUT and the actors. This march has been held annually for the past 10 years.
Sello Ramokgopa of SGLD said there is a perception that the Soshanguve campuses are a breeding ground for violence and they want to change that by organising such programme.
“We want students to come together instead of them going out to pubs outside the school grounds as this is not safe,” said Mr Ramokgopa.
Gift Mokhampanyane who plays the character of Fanie on Skeem Saam, said he felt that 16 days of no violence against women and children is not enough to run a campaign.
“We need 365 days to protect and take care of women and children. People need to realise that two minutes of being exposed to violence can ruin a persons’s life, perpetrators need to think before they act,” said Mr Mokhampanyane.
He advised students to care for each other because one needs to love and respect oneself to receive love and respect from others.
