Tshwane University of Technology department, Directorate of Extracurricular Development (DED) Soshanguve will be celebrating Mandela Day in a big way.

Practitioner, Jack Sibanyoni came up with an idea to do 67 Acts of Goodwill to celebrate Mandela Day.

The idea had initially been called 67 Centres. The project was to locate 67 centres, orphanages, old age homes and day cares centres around Pretoria.

“I had the idea in 2016 but because 67 is a big number, it was a bit scary. We attempted to get a database of centres around Mabopane, Soshanguve, Winterveldt and Hammanskraal but we ended up dropping the project.

“Because people want to do good for the 67 minutes, I decided to take the 67 and do something big.”

Because of the big Mandela Centenary hype this year, Mr Sibanyoni decided to carry on with his idea. He thought doing it this year would be big because it is the year where Mandela would’ve turned 100 years.

67 Acts of Goodwill will be a project where DED helps child headed homes, orphanages, old age homes and people who don’t work and are struggling in the townships of Pretoria.

DED will help where they can by asking for donations and using their own money.

Assistant project manager, Promise Makhubela, who is an employer at DED and a student as well at the university, said she loves helping people, not only does it only bring a smile to their faces but to her face as well.

Makhubela the organisation has challenges with planning and identifying people who need help because some people claim to be needy but are not.

Soshanguve Times will update with DED throughout the 67 Acts of Goodwill and how people can be involved.
