Service delivery in the City of Tshwane is still disrupted following protest action by the City’s employees since last week Friday, 26 July 2019.

The South Africa Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu) has vowed to intensify its crippling industrial action in Tshwane, which saw the entire CBD blocked yesterday and today, should the City not table a revised wage offer by Tuesday 30 July 2019.

This is after senior managers at the metro got an 18% increase and the workers are demanding a similar increase.

An intensified strike action could see all of the city’s 19,000 workforce downing tools in a bid to force the City to agree to the demand for an 18% wage increase, backdated to 2017.

Municipal workers are also disgruntled over the council’s decision that will see city manager Moeketsi Mosola receiving an R7.5m payout to step down at the end of July, stating that the amount could benefit a lot of the workers.

Today, the Labour Court granted the City an interdict against SAMWU restraining the union from what the City said was an illegal strike, including marching and intimidation.

The City urged staff members to return to work, “failing which, the staff members will be guilty of an unprotected strike which does not comply with the Labour Relations Act”.

SAMWU has thus far not pronounced on the intedict and how they will protect workers except to say that “the legal team is dealing with the matter”.

The City of Tshwane, Functional Head Media Liaison, Mr Klaas Mofomme, said residents are still advised to anticipate delays in the turn-around time to calls logged on service delivery related matters through the City’s Customer Care Centers.

All queries related to unblocking or reconnection should be sent to Creditcontrol@tshwane.gov.za with a proof of payment.

Mr Mofomme said as a result of the protest, several operational routes in the Tshwane Central Business District are blockaded by municipal buses and residents are encouraged to remain patient during this period.
