Waste materials disposed on the street, in the Informal settlement of Soshanguve extension 14

Residents of Soshanguve Extension- 14 are exposed to threats of disease due to the illegal dumping. This is caused by the absence of municipal garbage removal services, and the unpleasant smell from the garbage.

Mr Steve Ngubane of Soshanguve Extension- 14, said the illegal dumping site started on the side of the street with only a few waste materials disposed there and became worse when all residents started using it as their regular dumping spot. Motorists are not using the road anymore because of the it has now developed to a fully-fledged dumping site.

A worried resident who has been living in that area for three years, Mr Moses Phele, said the area is no longer conducive for human health.

“It is occupied by dumped materials and there is unpleasant scent all over, even waste- pickers have identified it as their hotspot to collect glass, plastic for recycling.

“The municipality must do something about this matter, however, it is also up to us as residents to take a step in dealing with illegal dumping even though we do not have any proper garbage site to dispose our waste materials.’’ Mr Phele said.
