The Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) conducted several by-law operations to check compliance with shops that sell perishable food products and other by-law infringements within Tshwane on Tuesday, 20 February 2024.

The Chief of Police was joined by the MMC for Community Safety and the MMC for Health in leading these operations. Other role players were officials from the Health Department and the Waste Management Services Division.

Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said in Pretoria North, eight shops were visited of which two were closed for non-compliance. Several infringement fines were issued and expired food products were removed from the shelves by health inspectors.

“A total of 25 waste bags containing expired food products were disposed of by waste management officials,” he said.

Senior Superintendent Mahamba added that four drug hotspots in the Pretoria North area were visited and about 80 people were searched.

“In the Pretoria CBD, the by-law operation focused on illegal street trading where hawkers who were blocking the sidewalk were removed, fines were issued for trading with no licences and those who obstructed the roadway by cutting hair and selling wigs were also removed,” he said.
