Lesedi La Batho, an NGO in Mabopane Block- B, operating at the Matseke Primary School hopes to come out of the COVID-19 Curfew stronger to continue assisting needy communities.

The NGO has to continue operating essential services to develop the community while taking strict measures to prevent employees and beneficiaries infected with COVID 19.

Lesedi La Batho’s Marketing Manager, Ms Mary Lant, explained how the organization has been performing during the COVID19 period.

“Many of our services to the community are limited. It is unfortunate that we cannot reach our beneficiaries at the same capacity as usual, however we are doing our best to remain a beacon of hope and to be a resource and center of information in Mabopane.

“Despite the restrictions on person-to-person contact, technology must be harnessed more than ever, and we must remain creative and open-minded.

“We have not received additional funding from the Department of Social Development during the COVID-19 period. Thankfully, none of our team members has been infected by the virus and we continue to be in good health and following government health protocols.’’

She said the distributed posters with health and safety information including the 200 bars of antibacterial soap in the community will help. The posters and soap were distributed to the vulnerable groups including sex workers and teenage mothers.

“Our management team conducts weekly remote risk management meetings to stay connected and alert to new developments,” she said.

The NGO is in partnership with the Brooklyn Methodist Church and some European organizations that help with funding for the food parcels program. With the help, they were able to provide extra groceries for needy families. The funding will also help after the lockdown to help destitute families that took a knock from the 21 Day curfew.

She said the postponed Career Expo will give them more time to fundraise and prepare better for the event. A new date for the Expo will be announced.

‘‘We must all adapt and find new ways to progress. We look forward to resuming our regular activities with renewed gratitude, purpose and strength once this strange time has passed – hopefully, sooner rather than later.’’ – Ms Lant said.

Ms Mpho Malema, a resident in Mabopane said, ‘‘this organization assist community members a lot, “personally – I know someone who is being assisted by the NGO.’’

Mr Solly Mulaudzi, from Mabopane, said, ‘‘organizations like this should be appreciated, they contribute tirelessly towards the community’s development.’’
