Gauteng Education MEC, Mr Panyaza Lesufi, has once again urged parents to take the school allocated to their children. Mr Lesufi said this during a media briefing on Sunday 27 September 2020, about the state of the online admission process.

He said the issue of space remains a concern for the department, but at the end, all children will be placed. “The space that we have as a department of basic education in Gauteng and the number of applications do not match. We got more applications than the available space, by extension there are parents that are not going to get their children placed at their preferred schools.

“There are no learners who will not be placed, the only difference is that we might place them at the school that they are not attending,” said Mr Lesufi.

He assured parents that their children will be placed despite the anticipated delays.

“We urge parents to remain calm if offers of placement are not received immediately after the commencement of the Placement Period, as all learners will be placed. To adhere to necessary COVID-19 Regulations, parents are advised not to visit schools without making an appointment,” he added.

“It is important to remember that the capacity of each school will determine the number of applicants that receive placement offers and the number of learners ultimately admitted to the school.

“The Gauteng capacity for Grade one and Grade eight pupils is 373,000 and has received almost 410,000 applications for placements.

“Parents will receive SMSes (texts) next week Thursday, that will show you that you have applied in School X and your child has been accepted at School X.

“Not everyone will receive the SMSes on the same day. After receiving an SMS, you will be given only seven days to accept the offer. To accept offers of placement, parents are urged to log on to www.gdeadmissions.gov.za. For inquiries on placements, parents may call 0800 000 789,” he said.
