The Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) suspended classes on 07 Monday, June 2021 due to the death of a student who allegedly succumbed to COVID-19.

TUT Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Stanley Mukhola, said the suspension of classes is also because of information from the Department of Health that indicates that the majority of provinces are currently in the third wave of Covid-19 infections.

He said the infection rate is especially high and concerning in Gauteng and that is one of the reasons TUT resolved to suspend contact lectures due to the increased risk of infections on campus.

“It was with extreme concern and sadness that the University this week took a note of the loss of a young student life due to Covid-19, and reports of an increasing number of students and staff testing positive with the virus,”.

Prof Mukhola said everyone should adopt the motto, “ I stay safe to help you keep safe,” as it is important to monitor health and to get tested if any of the COVID-19 signs are displayed.

“Students are advised to get tested without delay if they suspect that they might be positive, and report all Covid-19 to the University immediately at healthreports@tut.ac.za.

“Timeous action might just save the next person’s life,” he said.
